Macarons

The place where I usually indulged in this wonderful, crispy but chewy and a little melty treat was at Mille Feuille in Hillcrest, which is now closed. I have had others but Mille Feuille was definitely the pinnacle of macarons. Does anyone know of any other bakeries that make this?

Cupcakes

Cupcakes are sort of the new fad thing going around, and San Diego is a little late on picking up the trend. Nevertheless, there are always those days when you just crave a cake-y pick me up with extra frosting.

The flavors change out everyday. You can check what flavors are available for the day online. The owner is one very sweet Rosemary, and she's really passionate about the quality of product she produces. The cupcakes are mildly flavored, densely moist, and are crowned with a generous helping of buttercream frosting. I'm not that heavy into frosting and usually knock off about 2/3rds of it into a napkin, the excess which my bf will consume. Somedays they have mini-cupcakes as well, which are a perfect craving size, but I haven't seen it all that often. This place usually closes around 7pm (too early in my opinion, because when I get out of dinner in downtown its usually around 8) but will stay later on occasion. I don't recommend eating there too late in the day, as the cupcakes are made with such fresh ingredients that it can get a little stale by the end of the night. The parking down here is also atrocious, seating can get a little tricky, and they only offer bottled water, organic coffee, and milk.

The cupcakes here are huge and the flavors seem like they have no real rhyme or reason, just whatever flavors seem to appeal to the baker at the moment. Parking is much better, and they offer a much wider variety of drinks to accompany your cupcake. However, ( it may have been that they are stored in a refrigerated case) it just doesn't taste as good as Heavenly Cupcake. In a quick jiffy they'll satisfy a craving. Otherwise it was just ehhhh... almost like a grocery store cupcake, but with exotic flavoring, such as Key Lime.
